Proper maintenance is key to extending the lifespan of bamboo furniture. Termites and woodworms are the most formidable threats to bamboo furnishings, as bamboo is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, as well as sugars, fats, and proteins—nutrients that attract these destructive insects. Therefore, when using bamboo furniture, it is essential to implement preventive measures against insect infestation to ensure its durability and longevity.
Newly manufactured small- to medium-sized bamboo products, such as baskets and woven mats, are best treated with a high-temperature, sealed steam re-treatment process. Steaming for 2–3 hours will thoroughly eliminate any hidden insects and microorganisms within the bamboo items. Alternatively, soaking the bamboo products in boiling water mixed with a certain amount of salt for 1–2 days can effectively prevent insect infestation and decay.
General bamboo furniture should be placed in a dry, well-ventilated area. If frequently stored in damp, dark environments, the high humidity will create favorable conditions for microbial growth, leading to mold and insect infestation. For larger bamboo items such as cabinets, bookshelves, and lounge chairs, it is essential to regularly remove dirt from crevices, rinse them thoroughly with clean water, and allow them to dry completely in the sun. Especially for bamboo utensils that are temporarily not in use, they should be thoroughly cleaned, dried, and then stored in a dry, well-ventilated location to prevent moisture-related damage.
Generally, bamboo furniture is best coated with clear lacquer or seasoned tung oil. This not only helps prevent insect damage but also ensures durability and enhances its aesthetic appeal—truly a win-win solution.
To address insect infestations, the following methods can be employed: 1. Use a small amount of crushed chili peppers or Sichuan peppercorns, finely ground into powder, and stuff them into the insect holes. Then, pour boiling water over the area—this not only kills the insects but also prevents further spread. 2. Mix kerosene with a tiny amount of dichlorvos until well blended, and carefully drip the mixture into the insect-infested areas. This method effectively eliminates the pests. However, this approach is not recommended for bamboo items used to store food, such as baskets or cabinets, to avoid potential safety hazards.
