Currently, low-profile furniture is gaining immense popularity in the market. Even furniture advertisements featured in fashion magazines often highlight low tables and side tables, emphasizing their unique personality and trendy appeal. However, did you know that while many of these low-rise pieces may be stylish and distinctive, their improper height can easily lead to long-term health issues affecting the spine, lumbar region, cervical spine, vision, shoulders, elbows, knees, and leg joints—potentially laying the groundwork for various chronic conditions?
1. Table
When standing, extend your arms flat with palms facing the ground—this distance represents the ideal height for your desk. If the desk is too low, your upper body will naturally slump forward onto the surface, causing your head to droop as well. Prolonged slouching and bending over can easily lead to strain and fatigue in your spine, lower back, and neck. In severe cases, this posture may even contribute to spinal disorders, lumbar muscle strain, cervical issues, and other related health problems.
2. Chair
The height difference between the desk and chair should be between 280mm and 300mm. The clearance beneath the writing desk must be no less than 580mm in height and at least 520mm in width. When seated on the chair with both feet flat on the floor, if the thighs are parallel to the ground and the lower legs remain nearly perpendicular to the floor, then the chair height is appropriate. If the chair is positioned too close to the ground, it becomes difficult for the legs to extend fully when sitting, causing the lower limbs to remain bent. This prolonged posture prevents proper relaxation of the leg joints, leading to fatigue in the legs, lower back, and arms over time. Such conditions may increase the risk of developing certain lower-back disorders and even arthritis.
6. Coffee table
The height of the coffee table should be level with the sofa seating, allowing us to easily reach for items on its surface. If the coffee table is too low, when reaching for objects, individuals must exert downward force through their arms and lower back, which can easily lead to strain or injury in the lumbar region.
7. TV Cabinet
The height of the TV cabinet should ensure that, when viewers are seated, their line of sight aligns precisely with the center of the TV screen. If the cabinet is too low, it may force viewers to look downward, causing them to unconsciously tilt their heads forward—a posture that can strain the cervical spine and negatively impact vision. However, if the TV is mounted directly on the wall, the height of the cabinet becomes irrelevant.
8. Kitchen Utensils
In general, the ideal height for a cooktop surface is approximately 65 to 70 centimeters, while countertops and kitchen sinks should ideally be set at around 80 to 85 centimeters. Similarly, if kitchen utensils are positioned too low, individuals often find themselves bending over during cooking, which can easily lead to strain and fatigue in the neck and legs. Over time, this repetitive stress on the lower back, spine, and neck may result in chronic injuries or discomfort.
The above dimensions should be determined based on individual circumstances, as there is no strict standard. Primarily, adjustments can be made according to the user's height.
In summary, when selecting furniture, everyone should not focus solely on trendy and fashionable appearances. Instead, it's essential to personally try out each piece—ensuring that it provides a comfortable fit, effortless movement, minimal fatigue, and smooth flexibility.
