When selecting bamboo crafts or furniture, it is best to choose items that have already been coated with varnish or seasoned tung oil, as this not only prevents insect infestation but also ensures long-lasting durability. If you purchase small- to medium-sized bamboo products, it is advisable to subject them to high-temperature steam sterilization, which can effectively eliminate bacteria within the bamboo. Alternatively, you may immerse the bamboo items in boiling water mixed with salt for 1–2 days to prevent pest damage.

Bamboo baskets for vegetables, rice baskets, and rice-washing sieves should be promptly cleaned and thoroughly dried. For larger bamboo furniture pieces, ensure proper ventilation and dryness during storage. Additionally, if signs of insect damage are detected, apply a small amount of insecticide solution (such as dichlorvos) directly into the affected areas. Alternatively, finely ground chili peppers or Sichuan peppercorns can also be stuffed into the insect-infested holes, providing effective protection for your bamboo furniture.

For bamboo mats that are currently widely purchased and used, industry insiders advise consumers to buy them from reputable department stores or supermarkets whenever possible. When selecting a mat, pay attention to the following points: First, avoid purchasing "three-no" products—items lacking proper labeling, manufacturer information, and quality certification. Second, smell the mat carefully; a fresh, pleasant fragrance without any unusual odors is ideal. Third, check for excellent coloration—ensure the overall hue is uniform, free from dark spots, mold marks, insect holes, or burrs. Fourth, run your hand over the surface of the mat; it should feel smooth and even, with minimal unevenness. This ensures maximum comfort and durability. Properly processed bamboo mats remain resistant to mold and discoloration, making them easy to fold and clean. Additionally, it's recommended to rinse newly purchased mats thoroughly with boiling water before first use.
